Julian Magnetic Chess Set
myminifactory
This is something that I created as a gift for a friend of mine who loves chess. I thought I would share it with the world since it came out nicely. The goal of this chess set is to be small and magnetic. That way, it can be easier to play in the car or on the plane when lack of elbow room and bumpy conditions require a small and secure gameplay. The board is approximately 8"x8" and so the chess pieces themselves are quite small. The bottom of each piece is designed to friction-mate with a .5" diameter magnetic button (I used the ones made by GO Create! sold in a 52 pack at walmart for just a few bucks). The finished pieces were stained with cheap oil stain that I also got from Walmart, although the white pieces didn't really need it since they already printed in the same color of stain. The base of the board is a wood box picture frame purchased from Hobby Lobby. It measures 7.875"x7.875". On top of it I glued 24 gauge sheet metal and the printed grid. In reality, the bottom wood base isn't absolutely necessary but I wanted to give the board some more heft. The picture frame was stained with the same color as the dark pieces. All printed pieces were done with Gizmodorks Wood PLA at about 205C. Enjoy!
