Julia Vase: Stratus

Julia Vase: Stratus

thingiverse

I stumbled upon Virtox's Julia Vase series on Thingiverse and it completely blew my mind. He kept his workflow under wraps so I took it upon myself to dissect and recreate my own version. How challenging could it be, really, to voxel stack a non-linear perturbation of a Julia set? Surprisingly, it's quite a piece of cake and I recorded a step-by-step guide at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VmPtCf8m34 so everyone can dive into these breathtaking forms. Feel free to try it out and don't forget to share your results - we'd love to see what you come up with, plus any tweaks you make to the technique. The attached STL file represents a solid object but you can easily print it as a hollow vase by skipping the top layer and infill. Typically, this approach yields better results than adding a pre-programmed wall thickness during the slicing process. By the way, our team recently discussed this topic on the 3D Printing Today podcast available on iTunes, Stitcher radio or directly from the source at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/.
