He studied under his father, Jean-Louis Lemoyne, and Robert Le Lorrain. Known as Jean-Baptiste II Lemoyne or "the younger," he distinguishes himself from his uncle, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne the Elder, a prominent sculptor. Lemoyne won the prestigious prix de Rome award from the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture but chose to stay in Paris to care for his blind father. As a celebrated figure of his time, Lemoyne's down-to-earth personality was met with both criticism and acclaim as he championed the Rococo style that fell out of favor with the rise of Neoclassicism. Charles Othon Frédéric Jean-Baptiste de Clarac accused him of delivering a devastating blow to sculpture by disregarding classic traditions and essential principles, resulting in accusations of artistic weakness and intellectual shortcomings.
