The New York hardcore scene was home to a plethora of influential bands, but one group stood out among the rest - Judge. This iconic band emerged from Queens, New York in 1987, and their music would go on to leave an indelible mark on the genre. With their unique blend of aggression, melody, and intensity, Judge quickly gained a loyal following among fans of hardcore punk. Formed by vocalist Jimmy Peluso, guitarist Chris Stiegman, bassist Camilo Colón, and drummer Sammy Siegler, Judge was more than just another group in the NYHC scene - they were a force to be reckoned with. Their early days were marked by intense, DIY shows at local venues like CBGB's and A7, where they honed their craft alongside other influential bands of the era. One of Judge's most notable contributions to the NYHC scene was their emphasis on melody. Unlike many of their contemporaries, who prioritized aggression above all else, Judge managed to strike a balance between heavy riffs and catchy hooks. This approach helped set them apart from the pack and earned them a dedicated fan base. Despite their relatively short career - spanning just four years before disbanding in 1991 - Judge's impact on the NYHC scene was profound. They paved the way for future bands to experiment with melody, and their influence can still be heard in many modern hardcore groups.
