Joycon Grips

Joycon Grips

I've struggled to find a grip that meets my standards, so after investing in a printer, I decided to create my own XL detachable joycon. These custom grips are designed to securely attach to the back of the joycons by threading into them. Unfortunately, the stock joycon screws are too short, requiring you to source alternative screws for this design to work properly. Based on my research, I believe the standard screws measure 1.4mmx6mm in length. Since I don't have the correct screws, I'm using 2mm hex screws from a recent purchase, but I wouldn't recommend these as they may split or damage the screw posts on the joycon shell. However, if you're in a tight spot, it's still possible to make them work. To ensure a secure fit, I advise making sure that the counter-sunk holes of the grips are larger than the screw head used to prevent thread stripping when inserting the screws. In my edited design, I've increased the counter-sink holes to 4mm, which should minimize any issues. Currently, there are only three screw holes as I was concerned that adding one near the release button would weaken that piece too much. Despite using mostly stripped joycon shells, these grips remain solidly attached. If you're interested in using smaller screws, it's definitely possible, but keep in mind that I'm still learning and improving my 3D printing skills. To ensure accurate measurements, I employed a set of calipers to take precise readings and printed gauges to capture the curves. Although everything fits well, some minor filing or shaving may be necessary. If you're experiencing issues with a gap near the release button, double-check that the button is aligned with the hole before tightening the screws. I've also included a detachable peg for releasing the joycons, which can be trimmed to your desired length. One area where I encountered problems was under the ZL/ZR buttons, but my subsequent edits should have resolved this issue. This design comes in three different sizes, and so far, I'm most satisfied with the large one. It feels comfortable, although it may be a tad too thick at the bottom. Given my rushed printing process and suboptimal Cura profile settings, the quality is not ideal.
