Marble bust of the radical politician Joseph Hume: Scottish, Edinburgh, by Alexander Handyside Ritchie, dated 1830. The politician Joseph Hume (1777-1855) entered Parliament as a Tory in 1812. By 1830 he had become a radical who championed universal suffrage and religious freedom. Hume represented his birthplace, Montrose, in parliament from 1842 until his death. Ritchie’s bust shows him in the fashionable style of a classical hero. View this object (A.1975.233) in the Decorative and Applied Art Collection of National Museums Scotland.
