Japanese Figurine of a Female, 1000 - 800 BCE, Minneapolis Institute of Art Collection. From artsmia.org: Archaeologists have discovered numerous clay figurines—dogū—dating to Japan's prehistoric Jōmon period (14,000–300 bce). The most diverse forms were found in northeastern Japan, where this female figurine was unearthed. Some dogū are seated, others standing, with heart-shaped heads or round and wearing headpieces. Many have little or no surface decoration, while others, like this example, known as shakōki or "goggle-eyed" type, feature large eyes and intricate carvings.
