John the Baptist as a boy
myminifactory
This youthful figure of John the Baptist grasps a towering bronze cross firmly in his right hand, though it is missing from this particular cast. The original sculpture crowns a marble doorway in Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, marking the culmination of a project undertaken by Benedetto da Maiano in 1472 to partition the Sala Grande on the second floor into an antechamber and a reception hall. Working alongside his brother Giuliano (1432-90), Benedetto designed the doorway, while taking sole responsibility for its figurative elements, which include this captivating rendering of John the Baptist.
