John Ray (29 November 1627 – 17 January 1705) was a renowned English naturalist, widely recognized as one of the pioneers of the English parson-naturalists and the man who initiated the adventure of modern science. Until 1670, he signed his name as John Wray but afterwards used 'Ray', after confirming that such had been the practice of his family before him. He published significant works on botany, zoology, and natural theology, which were essential contributions to the field. His classification system for plants in Historia Plantarum was a crucial step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the traditional method of classifying species by using a pre-determined, either/or type system, and instead classified plants based on similarities and differences observed through direct observation. By doing so, he advanced scientific empiricism against the deductive rationalism of the scholastics. He was the first to provide a biological definition for the term species.
