John Ray was a renowned English naturalist known for being one of the pioneering parson-naturalists in England. Until 1670, he signed his name as John Wray, however after verifying that this had been the practice within his family before him, he switched to using 'Ray'. As an accomplished scholar, Ray produced significant works on botany, zoology, and natural theology. His groundbreaking classification of plants in his Historia Plantarum played a pivotal role in shaping modern taxonomy. By rejecting the traditional method of dichotomous division that classified species according to predetermined categories, Ray instead classified plants based on their observable similarities and differences. He was also the first to provide a biological definition of the term 'species'.
