Johannes de doper
sketchfab
Relief crafted with a depiction of John the Baptist produced from limestone. This relief originated in the Utrecht St. John's Church, where it was discovered turned upside down and used as a step in 1838 on the stairs leading to the high choir. The relief, depicting the patron saint of the church, dates back to the last quarter of the 12th century and likely formed part of a 12th-century ambo, a pulpit. Stylistically, this relief is related to two reliefs from St. Odiliënberg height. The holy man is shown wearing his camel hair robes and holding a book with the text: 'Prepare the way of the Lord.' Measuring 144 cm high and 32 cm wide. Inscription on book: PARATE // VIAM . DO // MINO; Epitaph on nimbus: JOHANNES.BAPTISTA. Visible in paintings and drawings by Saenredam from 1636 as part of the 16th-century choir closing, along with a similar pendant relief.
