The Takanami-class destroyer is Japan's fourth generation post-war ship, built specifically for the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. Representing an upgraded version of its predecessor, the Murasame-class, significant upgrades include a state-of-the-art OPS-24B fire control system with active electronically scanned array technology and improved data link capabilities. A modern sonar system has also been integrated into this class. In terms of weaponry, the Takanami class features a powerful 127 mm gun replacing its smaller counterpart on earlier ships, the Murasame-class destroyer's 3-inch gun. Furthermore, an older model Sea Sparrow anti-air missile was exchanged for cutting-edge Evolved Sea Sparrow ESSM (RIM-162) missiles in MK41 VLS, which not only handles these air defense systems but also controls ASROC ordnance delivery systems. This enhancement resulted in a notably larger hull than the Murasame, an increase of about 100 tons due to these upgrades.
