The Five Dhyani Buddhas, revered as conquerors or victors, embody the five qualities of the Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism. First documented by British Resident Brian Hodgson in early 19th century Nepal, these Buddhas are not found in traditional primary sources. Representations of the five wisdom Tathagatas and great Buddhas, they appear frequently in Vajrayana mandalas. In Shingon Buddhism, a Japanese school founded by Kukai, these five Buddhas serve as the central focus for realization and meditation.
