This medieval mouthpiece is known as a Jew's harp or jaw harp. It was discovered during archaeological excavations at Edinburgh Castle between 1989 and 1991. Recognized as one of the oldest musical instruments in existence, the harp's flexible metal tongue can be plucked over the mouth to produce resonant sounds with changing pitches.
