Jetan - Martian Chess Variant
thingiverse
Inspired by the iconic "Chessmen of Mars" novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs and the visionary artwork of Frank Frazetta, I created a set of models representing the 8 distinctive playing pieces from the book. With 21 unique modular components, the complete collection consists of 194 individual parts. To assemble each piece, substitute "rings" with an innovative solution - adding weight by attaching a 1/4-20 flat head cap screw using easily accessible hardware found at most local stores. Optional lead weights, available in a separately provided casting model, can also be used for game environments with reduced gravity. Embark on your journey to Barsoom! Instructions: Taking inspiration from my initial pencil sketches dating back to 1878, which were a reflection of my first thrilling visit to the Red Planet, I meticulously crafted these designs using Solidworks 2014 and then brought them to life through the capabilities of a Makerbot Replicator2. Aspiring designers will appreciate this valuable lesson: never give up on your vision - instead, continually refine it. The depicted pieces showcase a stunning contrast with colors from both MG Chemicals' Metallic Silver and true Makerbot Yellow, resulting in an otherworldly beauty. To add even more excitement, I also experimented by printing two sets in Shaxon Orange and Shaxon Black. A vital note to heed: the translucent orange might be prone to showing thread marks at a layer height of .2mm. To mitigate this issue, it is advisable to tap the threads, especially if working at higher speeds. On the other hand, printing at .1 will likely produce excellent results without any noticeable flaws. A particular favorite among fans of "The Chessmen of Mars" would undoubtedly be the inclusion of the Makerbot true yellow; after all, it aptly reflects the vibrant hues often associated with the yellow-skinned inhabitants from planet Barsoom, a nod to Mr. Burroughs' rich world-building that has captivated readers for generations.
