Jerusalem Cricket

Despite being commonly known as Jerusalem crickets, these insects don't actually belong to the true cricket family. Instead, they're part of the Stenopelmatidae family, while genuine crickets fall under Gryllidae. You can find them primarily in the Western United States and Mexico. These nocturnal creatures spend most of their time underground, using their powerful mandibles to feed on dead organic matter. They also eat other insects from time to time. Many people have strange superstitions and folklore surrounding this insect due to its unusual appearance that's often compared to an alien with a humanoid face. In Navajo culture, several names reference the insect's head, like "Red Skull" or "Red Skull Bug." The Spanish refer to it as the "Earth Child" or simply "Child's Face."
