The legend of Seolmundae Halmang is deeply ingrained in Jeju's cultural heritage. As the myth goes, Seolmundae Halmang possessed incredible strength, able to cover vast distances in a single stride - from Seongsan Ilchulbong to Guan Tal island at Aewol with ease, and reach Mount Halla in just two strides. Her remarkable vitality was matched only by her impressive family, consisting of 500 children. With seven scoops of earth, she constructed the majestic Mount Halla. One day, as Seolmundae Halmang prepared a hearty soup for her sons while they were out hunting, tragedy struck - she slipped into the pot and met an untimely demise by drowning. Returning from their hunt, the famished sons devoured the meal without realizing that it contained their own mother's remains. However, one of the brothers, the youngest, knew the terrible truth. He revealed the shocking reality to his siblings, prompting a heartfelt outpouring of grief that ultimately transformed the family into 500 stones.
