Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert, a renowned French mathematician, mechanician, physicist, philosopher, and music theorist, was born on November 16, 1717. Until 1759, he collaborated with Denis Diderot as co-editor of the influential Encyclopédie. The d'Alembert formula, which provides solutions to the wave equation, bears his name. This formula is also known as d'Alembert's equation. The wave equation itself has become synonymous with d'Alembert's work.
