Jean D'Aire

Rodin crafted this figure as one of six gigantic statues forming an impressive monument honoring fourteenth-century residents of northern France's Calais. Six courageous men had risked their lives by offering themselves as hostages to persuade the English to lift a siege and save their city from starvation. When modern-day Calais, about to demolish its medieval walls, decided to build a monument celebrating its rich heritage, Rodin seized this opportunity with enthusiasm in 1884 and successfully secured the commission.
