Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres' portrait by his close friend Lorenzo Bartolini showcases a French neo-classical painter's artistry. Born in Prato, Italy, Lorenzo Bartolini honed his skills as a painter and sculptor in Paris. He went on to become the Director of Carrara and Florence's Academies, and after Canova's passing, he rose to prominence as Italy's leading neo-classical sculptor. This artwork owes its style to Italian quattrocento bronzes and classical relief sculptures. The artist is depicted wearing a working blouse, surrounded by an owl representing wisdom and an acanthus flower. The original plaster model can be found in Florence's Gipsoteca Bartoliniana, while a bronze version from around 1806 resides at Paris' Ecole des Beaux Arts.
