The human mouth is made up of several movable parts, and one of the most important ones is the mandible, which serves as the lower jawbone. It moves up and down when we speak or chew food. The mandible is connected to the skull through a hinge-like joint that allows it to pivot freely. This enables us to open our mouths wide enough to take in large amounts of food or air.
