Inventory number: MNCAST [7/09] 0100 Provenance: Castle of Montemor-o-Novo A small container made from thin maple wood is carefully brought to the table. Its distinctive inverted frustoconical collar features two sturdy vertical wings that evoke the shape of a piper. At its base, the vessel curves outward in a concave and circular shape before finishing with a burnished sheen. The rich tradition of winemaking was deeply ingrained in Montemorian culture, where vineyards were first mentioned in one of the village's terms during the 15th century. Wine played a vital role in daily life, with people consuming an average of 1 to 2 liters per day, water being the primary beverage for lower-class individuals. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a staggering number of jars, vases, and bottles, demonstrating this intense consumption of liquids and wine. At meals, ceramic vases and cups were used to drink wine or water, as metal vessels apparently didn't conform to peninsular tastes.
