Museo of Origin: Museo de Siyâsa (Cieza, Murcia) Inventory Number: R-790: CC-87-IV–C.10 24 and CC-87-C.12 52 Dating: 1200-1250 A.D. Technical Description: An ornamental jar decorated with esgrafiado technique, consisting of painting with a contrasting color on the background, in this case manganese oxide (black) on light yellow clay, and then puncturing the surface with a tool to create decoration. The neck of the vessel features the jamsa or "hand of Fatima," an amulet that protects against evil eye. The body or belly of the vessel depicts the "tree of life." The tree is flanked by two facing birds, symbolizing balance between complementary parts of creation. Decorations on the neck and body are repeated on both sides of the jar. References: • Navarro, J.
