Jar

Dr Iskandar has a strong affinity for vessels that embody the Japanese concept of shibui, which involves reverence and discernment of beauty in unassuming things. He finds this quality in medieval or ancient kilns' wares like tanbayaki (tamba ware) and earthy tsubo (storage jars). These examples are also found in Southeast Asia's martaban jars. Dr Iskandar's stoneware jar has a simple form with a slightly everted rim and wide mouth, giving it a reassuring look. Its earthy tones and coarse surface give the vessel a rustic feel. The somber browns are lifted by decoration created through resist and masking techniques that add visual interest to the pattern.
