Japanese puzzle box
thingiverse
This is a traditional Japanese puzzle box / secret box based on the instructions found at https://app.box.com/s/kkwpxwaxgl6cu0ddkuafadge7xuu9n07. Originally meant to be wood, a 3D print fits perfectly. I have contacted the author and received his approval to create the 3D models and post them here on Thingiverse. I added ornaments for every side. The dimensions proposed here are 96mm x 96mm, leaving a center space of 40x32mm with a height of 64mm. The default files provided are at exact dimensions, as ancient Japanese puzzle boxes were a very precise handwork. You will need some filling and sanding to fit all the pieces correctly together. The aim is for nothing to move by itself, requiring the user to apply a slight force to push the sides. As I don't know how accurate your printer is or how motivated you are, I included a zip containing fitted parts with 0.2mm less on every side that should glide, thus requiring less fitting after printing. Only the bottom and top parts are fitted; the side parts remain the same. Each version comes with all parts doubled: one set has carvings for ornaments and the other does not. For opening and closing instructions, you can check my video at https://youtu.be/edVAVdei3cY or the pdf document. I hope you enjoy this box and my work. Stay tuned; I am currently designing the next one, the Chinese Dragon box.
