These Japanese styled lanterns were designed to serve as the focal point of a wedding reception, doubling as centerpieces and table numbers for the special occasion. A series of battery powered fairy lights were strategically placed within each lantern to create an enchanting ambiance during the event. In total, 16 elaborate centerpieces consisting of 96 distinct components were crafted using four high-performance Ultimaker printers, which ran non-stop for a full week, pushing their capabilities to the limit! The intricately designed lanterns can be broken down into four primary parts: Frame - Engineered to print independently without any support structures, this component takes approximately 8.5 hours to complete at a layer height of 0.2mm, with an infill density of 15% and two shells for added strength. Lid - Optimized to fill the entire bed of the UM2+, this part prints quickly in just 7 hours at the same layer height, infill density, and shell configuration as the frame. Insert - Utilizing Spiralize (Vase) mode in Cura software, this component can be printed using natural PLA or a clear filament like T-Glase for a distinctive appearance. Numbers (optional) - Printed separately and then carefully attached to the insert, these numbers add an extra touch of elegance to the overall design. To personalize the windows in your own lantern, download the CAD assembly from the Fusion360 Gallery or GrabCAD library.
