The Musashi, named after the ancient Japanese province, was one of two Yamato-class battleships constructed for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1930s. As the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever built, the Musashi displaced 72,800 long tons fully loaded and was equipped with nine 46-centimetre main guns. The secondary armament consisted of four 15.5-centimetre triple-gun turrets previously used by Mogami-class cruisers, and she carried six or seven floatplanes for reconnaissance purposes. Commissioned in mid-1942, the Musashi underwent modifications to serve as a flagship before being transferred to Truk in early 1943. Over the year, she sortied multiple times with the fleet in unsuccessful searches for American forces. In 1944, she was used to transfer forces and equipment between Japan and various occupied islands. Musashi was torpedoed by an American submarine in early 1944 and underwent repairs in Japan, during which her anti-aircraft armament was greatly augmented. However, she met her fate on October 24, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf when she was sunk by an estimated 19 torpedo and 17 bomb hits from American carrier aircraft. Over half of her crew was rescued.
