Jane Austen's Portable Writing Companion was a gift from her father in 1794. This versatile writing-box folds out to provide a slope for effortless writing. Equipped with multiple compartments, it features space for an inkwell and a secure drawer for storing paper and precious items. When Jane Austen passed away in 1817 at the age of 41, the desk was bequeathed to her sister Cassandra. It then made its way through her eldest brother's family lineage. In 1999, Joan Austen-Leigh, Jane Austen's great-great-great-niece, graciously donated it to the British Library.
