Jane Austen's father gave her a beautiful wooden writing desk in 1794. This clever 'writing-box' folds out to create a perfect slope for writing, and it has several useful compartments, including a special space for an ink pot and a safe drawer to store paper and valuable items. When Jane Austen passed away at the age of 41 in 1817, her sister Cassandra inherited this treasured desk. It was later passed down through their eldest brother's family. In 1999, Joan Austen-Leigh, Jane Austen's great-great-great-niece, kindly donated it to the British Library.
