A beautifully crafted wooden writing desk once owned by the renowned author Jane Austen has been carefully preserved and is now on display at a prominent library. This portable writing-box, a gift from her father in 1794, features a clever design that allows it to open and provide a smooth writing surface. The desk's various compartments are thoughtfully arranged to keep writing supplies organized, including a designated space for an ink pot and a lockable drawer to store valuable papers and other treasured possessions. When Austen passed away in 1817 at the age of 41, her beloved desk was inherited by her sister Cassandra, who cherished it as a family heirloom. The desk later found its way into the possession of Austen's eldest brother's family, where it remained for generations. In 1999, Jane Austen's great-great-great-niece Joan Austen-Leigh made a generous donation to the British Library, presenting the iconic writing desk to their esteemed collection.
