Sir Ferdinando Wainman, Master of Ordnance at James Fort and a shrewd investor in the Virginia Company, was a respected knight who commanded a high-ranking military position, overseeing Jamestown's arms and armor supplies. Born in 1576 in Oxfordshire, England, to an influential aristocratic family, Wainman was the first cousin of Thomas West, Lord De La Warr, the inaugural governor of Virginia. Upon his arrival at James Fort with Lord De La Warr on June 10, 1610, Wainman was swiftly appointed Master of Ordnance and entrusted with leadership of the colony's horse troops, also earning a seat on the governing council. Despite his prominence in Virginia, however, little is known about Wainman's tenure there. This artifact originates from Smithsonian X 3D, made available under a Share Alike, Non-Commercial license.
