The James Webb Space Telescope, also referred to as JWST, will feature a substantial 6.5-meter primary mirror that operates at infrared wavelengths. Engineers are presently on track for a 2018 launch date. Serving thousands of astronomers across the globe, the Webb telescope will represent the leading observatory of the next decade. It will scrutinize every stage in the universe's history, spanning from the initial luminous glows following the Big Bang to the formation of solar systems capable of supporting life on planets similar to Earth and the evolution of our own Solar System. Previously known as the "Next Generation Space Telescope" (NGST), it was renamed in September 2002 after James Webb, a former NASA administrator.
