MacGillivra made a commanding impression as a prime subject for sculptor Schotz, who showcased him in his debut solo exhibition in Glasgow in 1923 with this striking bust. As a renowned portrait and monumental sculptor on the international scene, MacGillivray was proud to have modeled him at his peak. Pittendrigh James MacGillivray, born in 1856 and passing away in 1939, took charge of several statues adorning the exterior of the National Scottish Portrait Gallery building, including those of notable figures Sir Henry Raeburn and David Hume. Schotz remembered his strong-willed and fervent sitter as someone who highly valued the finished bust.
