First time trying out virtual reality, you'll notice that if the scene's brightness is way off, it's probably because the lighting settings in the VR experience itself need to be adjusted. Meanwhile, for modeling within the viewport on my Lenovo Mirage Solo headset, I've found it to work pretty smoothly so far.
