A jack-o-lantern is a gourd that has been carved out to form a lantern, traditionally for Halloween. It's typically made from a pumpkin and is often lit from within by a candle or other light source. The practice of carving pumpkins originated in Ireland where people would carve turnips and other root vegetables to make lanterns for the festival of Samhain. When Irish immigrants came to America they found that pumpkins were a more abundant and easier to carve than turnips.
