Jack-o-lanterns are a traditional symbol of Halloween. They're carved pumpkins that have been hollowed out and decorated with eerie faces. The origins of this custom date back to the Irish festival of Samhain, where people would carve turnips to ward off spirits. When Irish immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins were a more abundant and easier to carve than turnips.
