Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars: Model Sculpted in Zbrush Jabba the Hutt, a massive slug-like alien, is a main character in George Lucas's iconic space opera film saga Star Wars. His appearance has been likened by renowned film critic Roger Ebert to a striking combination of a toad and the Cheshire Cat. In the original theatrical releases of the original Star Wars trilogy, Jabba the Hutt made his debut in Return of the Jedi (1983), although he was mentioned in both Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). A previously deleted scene featuring Jabba the Hutt was incorporated into the 1997 theatrical re-release and subsequent home media releases of Star Wars. As a powerful crime boss, Jabba's role in Star Wars is primarily antagonistic; he is introduced as the individual with a bounty on Han Solo's head. Jabba, who is approximately 600 years old, operates his vast criminal empire through a retinue of ruthless criminals, skilled bounty hunters, cunning smugglers, deadly assassins, and formidable bodyguards. In his opulent palace on the arid desert planet Tatooine, he keeps an extensive collection of entertainers at his disposal: slaves, droids, and exotic alien creatures. Jabba is notorious for his dark sense of humor, insatiable appetite, and predilections for high-stakes gambling, beautiful slave girls, and brutal torture. The character has been expertly woven into the Star Wars merchandising campaign that coincided with the theatrical release of Return of the Jedi. Besides his cinematic appearances, Jabba the Hutt is prominently featured in Star Wars literature and occasionally referenced by his full name: Jabba Desilijic Tiure. Jabba's image has since exerted a profound influence on popular culture, particularly within the United States. The name is often employed as a satirical literary device and a political caricature to underscore negative qualities such as morbid obesity and corruption.
