Thorvaldsen highly valued his friendship with the Norwegian landscape painter J.C. Dahl, considering him one of the finest painters of his era. J.C. Dahl graduated from Copenhagen's prestigious Academy of Arts between 1811 and 1818, and later became a professor at Dresden's esteemed Academy of Fine Arts in 1824. In 1821, during Dahl's second sojourn in Rome, Thorvaldsen created this portrait bust, which was originally given to him by the sculptor as a gift before being finally completed in marble around 1827.
