Development of the project began in 1935, with the first Type IX boats entering operation in 1938. In the future, these boats continued to improve, with only seven modifications made - A, B, C, C/40, D1, D2, and D/42. As a result, a total of 193 boats of different Type IX modifications were built, making them the second mass-produced submarine of Germany after the Type VII submarine.
