(Been holding onto this for a while while I tried to get a good photo of the final build. I still don't have a good photo/video of it working but it's been over 2 months so I thought i should finally hit publish.) The design for a functioning transforming version of ivy valentines whip sword has been in the back of my mind for quite a while, a few weeks ago the final design came to me randomly, so here it is. The current handle parts are not costume accurate since i (being an overweight male) am not planning on using this for cosplay anytime soon, but hopefully the blade mechanism and current handle can be used as a basis for somebody else to make a more accurate version. The blade is made of pairs of blade segments glued to each other to make each segment complete, then the next segment gets constructed around the ball joint that's left exposed. Use the blade tip pieces to cap the final section. The mechanism works by running fishing line from the blade tip section (there's a hollow to attach the end of the line) through each section, into the handle. Then you have two options, either run the line into the pommel section and attach it to some form of pull tab there, or as I am planning run the line down to the hole in the handle base, the hole should be large enough to accommodate a section of Bowden tubing, use the Bowden tubing to run the line across your body (I'm running it from my left wrist, up my arm, across my chest. then capping it with a keyring loop, which I can hopefully keep attached to my right hand, then I can control the line tension by moving my right hand closer or further away from my chest. (in the end I had to abandon the Bowden tubing idea, drilled a hole through the pommel and attached the fishing line to a keyring loop at the pommel) Hopefully that makes sense, I hope to have attached a video of the transformation before I publish this which should help keep things clear, otherwise feel free to ask via comments (clearly I didn't, hope to get around to it soon)
