However, his vision was confronted by Muslim nationalism in the early 1940s, which called for a separate homeland carved out of India. As independence dawned on August 15, 1947, Gandhi witnessed the British Indian Empire's division into two dominions – predominantly Hindu India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. In the aftermath of this fateful partition, numerous Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs set off towards their new lands, leading to intense communal violence in regions like Punjab and Bengal.
