Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, and died January 30, 1948, in Delhi, was a powerful leader of the nationalist movement against British rule in India. Gandhi led Indian resistance to the British-imposed salt tax with his 1930 Dandi Salt March, covering 400 kilometers. Later, he demanded the British Quit India in 1942, which got him locked up for many years on multiple occasions in both South Africa and India. He lived simply, wearing a traditional Indian dhoti and shawl hand-spun on a charkha, in a self-sufficient community and eating simple vegetarian food. Gandhi also practiced long fasts for both personal and political reasons. As India was on the cusp of independence, Muslim nationalism rose to power demanding a separate homeland, but Gandhi's vision was for a pluralistic independent India. When Britain finally granted freedom in August 1947, they carved out two new dominions: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Tensions ran high between Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs trying to find their new places. Even after Gandhi traveled the country comforting the wounded, violent clashes persisted. The once peaceful leader responded with several more fasts unto death in hopes of calming things down. The last fast began on January 12, 1948, just before his 78th birthday, had two objectives: bring peace and collect payment for outstanding debts to Pakistan. Many thought Gandhi was going too easy on people like Nathuram Godse who eventually fired three bullets into Gandhi's chest, killing him on January 30, 1948. In India, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on his October 2 birthday as a national holiday while internationally, it marks the International Day of Nonviolence. Many refer to him affectionately as Father of the Nation in India. The Bapu title also comes from Gujarati which means father. The private collection photo is held at a studio in Mumbai and has undergone thorough digital reconstruction thanks to 3D scanning with DSLR and post-processing software like Reality Capture, Zbrush
