Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer, is best known as the leader of the nationalist movement against British rule in India. Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, he became a powerful figure after leading Indians in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with a historic 400-kilometer march in 1930, and later called for British forces to quit India in 1942. Gandhi was frequently imprisoned in both South Africa and India for many years on various occasions, yet lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community, wearing traditional Indian clothing made from yarn hand-spun on a charkha. He also followed a simple vegetarian diet and undertook lengthy fasts to cleanse himself and make powerful statements about politics. Gandhi envisioned an independent India based on respect for all faiths but was opposed by new Muslim nationalists in the early 1940s who were pushing for their own separate homeland carved out of India. On August 15, 1947, Britain granted India independence, dividing it into two main areas - a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan. As millions of displaced people traveled to their new homes, brutal violence broke out in various parts of the country, with special devastation seen in Punjab and Bengal. In contrast, Gandhi chose not to join official Independence Day celebrations in Delhi, instead traveling to affected zones to provide comfort to those who were grieving. For months afterward, he conducted several self-starvation fasts in a bid to bring an end to brutal attacks along religious lines. The last of these, carried out on January 12, 1948 at the age of seventy-eight, was designed not just to protest violence but also put pressure on India to hand over assets it owed to its neighboring Pakistan. However, many Indians felt Gandhi gave too much leeway, including Nathuram Godse - a member of Hindu nationalist movement who murdered Gandhi with three shots fired straight into his chest in the city of Delhi. In tribute to his contributions, the people of India honor Mahatma Gandhi's birth day, October 2nd as the holiday 'Gandhi Jayanti'. His birthday is recognized globally as International Day for Non-violence. As India considers Gandhi its founding father without ever formally doing so - some even give him an endearing nickname known as "Bapu", a term in Gujarati signifying "papa" or father
