A portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi by name, (born October 2, 1869, Porbandar, India—died January 30, 1948, Delhi), is an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who emerged as the leader of the nationalist movement against British rule in India. Gandhi led Indians in resisting the British-imposed salt tax with a historic 400 km Dandi Salt March in 1930, and later in calling for British Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned many times, both in South Africa and India. Gandhi lived simply in a self-sufficient community, wearing traditional Indian dhoti and shawl woven by hand on a charkha, and eating simple vegetarian food. He also fasted long as means of self-purification and protest. Gandhi's vision for an independent India based on religious freedom was challenged in the early 1940s by Muslim nationalism demanding a separate homeland carved out of India. In August 1947, Britain granted independence, but partitioned British India into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. As many displaced people made their way to new lands, violent clashes broke out between Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs in the Punjab and Bengal. Eschewing official celebrations in Delhi, Gandhi visited the affected areas attempting to comfort them. In months that followed, he conducted several fasts unto death to stop violence. The last of these undertaken on 12 January 1948 at age 78 also had the indirect goal of pressuring India to pay off its debts owed to Pakistan. Some Indians thought Gandhi was too compromising. Among them was Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, who assassinated Gandhi by firing three bullets into his chest on January 30, 1948. Gandhi's birthday October 2 is observed as a national holiday in India and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is often referred to informally as the Father of the Nation in India. He is also known affectionately as Bapu in Gujarat. Found in a private collection in Mumbai. A three-dimensional scan was made using DSLR camera, then photos were processed with Reality Capture and Zbrush software.
