The Original Italian sandwich, also known as the Maine Italian sandwich, is an American submarine sandwich made with Italian-American flavors that originated on a long bread roll or bun stuffed with meats, cheese and various vegetables. The different ingredients come together to create a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The Original Italian sandwich was first created in Portland, Maine, by Giovanni Amato, a skilled baker, back in 1903. It's called a submarine sandwich or simply a sub in Boston, Massachusetts, while locals in East Boston refer to it as a spuckie.
