Beth Shean's limestone tells a story of a cult that was deeply rooted in the community - the cult of Dionysus. According to tradition, Beth Shean-Scythopolis was founded by none other than the god himself, making him its patron deity. A stunning altar dedicated to Dionysus has been unearthed in the city's basilica, showcasing images associated with his worship: a majestic face, silenus, one of his loyal companions, pan, the guardian of shepherds, poles topped with pinecones, a panpipe, and a shepherd's staff. The Greek inscription proudly declares, "Good luck to Dionysus, our founding lord. Seleucus, son of Ariston, dedicates this altar in gratitude for the god's favor."
