Isolino Virginia Stratigraphy
sketchfab
Isolino di Varese emerges as a unique artificial island within Lake Varese, shaped by centuries of overlapping human settlements from the early Neolithic period around 5300 cal BC to the Iron Age. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, it stands out as the oldest known pile-dwelling site in the circumalpine region. The AgriChange project conducted targeted core and profile sampling at this site to gain a deeper understanding of economic practices during the Neolithic period. A 3D reconstruction is presented here, showcasing the original profile exposed by Bertolone in the 1950s, which dates back to various phases of the Neolithic period. Normally, this section remains hidden due to its submersion below the water table. This unique opportunity allows visitors to revisit the site's stratigraphy at any time. Project direction: F.
