The Iosif Stalin or IS tank, named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, was a heavy tank developed by the USSR during WWII. Also referred to as JS or ИС tanks, these armored vehicles were designed with robust armor to counter German 88mm guns and equipped with a main gun capable of defeating Tiger and Panther tanks. Primarily a breakthrough tank, it fired heavy high-explosive shells useful against fortifications and bunkers. In late 1944, the design evolved into the IS-3, featuring enhanced armor layout and a distinctive hemispherical cast turret that became a signature of post-war Soviet tanks. However, this low, spherical turret reduced working headroom inside the tank, particularly for the loader, making Soviet tanks notoriously cramped compared to Western counterparts.
