The IS-1, a heavily armored tank, was specifically designed to combat German 88 mm guns. It boasted a powerful main gun that could defeat both the German Tiger and Panther tanks. Primarily a breakthrough vehicle, the IS-1 fired a heavy high-explosive shell effective against fortifications and bunkers. Entered service in April '44, it played a crucial role in the Battle of Berlin by the Red Army during WWII. The prototype, IS-85 (Object 237), was initially approved for production as the IS-1 heavy tank, with first deliveries occurring in October '43; however, production ceased in January '44.
