My friend's son loves the Iron Giant, and I was asked to make one for him. I found this model on GrabCad (https://grabcad.com/library/iron-giant-1) and modified it so that it could be printed. The modifications included articulating arms, head, and waist. Note: I had initially forgotten to include the shoulders; however, they have since been added. Parts: Head Upper torso front Upper torso back Lower torso Hip (x2) Left leg Right leg Forearms Upper arm (x2) Shoulder pin (x4) Printing: The orientation of the prints is important. In particular, the upper arm and legs should be printed lying down to maximize strength. The lower legs have supports in the model that work well but can leave some scarring. Assembly: You will need some glue, with super glue being a good choice. Before assembly, clean all the parts thoroughly. Many of the models include supports that require punching out with a screwdriver or prying out with pliers. Arm Assembly: To assemble an arm, you'll need a shoulder piece, two shoulder pins, an upper arm, and a lower arm. Clean up any prints carefully before assembly, and avoid forcing the pin, as it can break off (I've learned from experience!). After attaching the pin, apply a few drops of super glue to secure it in place. Waist Assembly: You will need the lower torso piece and two hip pieces for this part. Before gluing them together, do a test fit, as you may need to trim off the tip of one of the hips to ensure a flush joint. Once you've confirmed the fit is correct, glue everything securely, paying particular attention to the interface between the hip and crotch. Torso Assembly: Place the head, arms, and waist into the upper torso pieces. First, do a dry fit to check that all joints rotate smoothly. Clean up any necessary parts and interfaces before proceeding. Once you're satisfied with the alignment, glue everything in place carefully, taking care not to apply too much glue near the joints. Leg Assembly: Again, start with a dry fit to ensure accurate alignment is achieved. This will make it easier for the legs to stand on their own two feet without assistance. After ensuring proper alignment, secure everything in place using suitable glue. And you're done!
